Casual Editor/Agent Contacts at Conferences

or

When is it Okay to Snub Your Friend?

Some of the most productive conversations come from casually saying hello in the hallways. Even in this open forum, these encounters should be considered small business meetings. When you’ve got an editor’s or agent’s attention all to yourself, others shouldn’t intrude unless you invite them in. Body language is the clue. Let others know that you’re conducting a business meeting by giving them a small vague smile when they approach, then turn to face more fully toward the editor/agent. Usually, the editor/agent will help your efforts – anything from nodding politely then totally focusing on you to totally ignoring the other person. While this behavior sounds abrupt, it is an acceptable and effective way to conduct casual business at conferences. Your friends will understand and they will expect the same courtesy from you.
