How this website came to be

author planning promo strategyMy fascination with marketing started years ago. What gets the masses excited? Does the buzz really start with one person or is that just a myth? Do small efforts really count or do you need a huge advertising budget for an international compaign?

I've always contended that buzz happens, like magic but with hard work and planning behind it. I've studied successful campaigns and unsuccessful campaigns and have looked for difference between the two. More on that in another article. (By the way, buzz is now called viral marketing. Sounds disgusting, doesn't it? We're going to keep calling it buzz.)

Some of these ideas were developed to promote my own debut novel, TAKING FLIGHT.  For a hardback, sweet Southern romance, it has done very well.  Other ideas came from keen observation of authors, successful and not-so-successful.

Pros and Cons of Do It Yourself Promo

Advertising is one of  those mysteries where you throw in time and money and hope you get a return.  Everyone agrees that an author needs promotion to distinguish his/her book from all the others on the shelf.  And then the author needs MORE promotion to convince the reader to pick that particular book.

What works best?  That depends.

After the Sale: Promotion

Congratulations!

  • You've written a book, all the way to 'The End.'
  • You SOLD your book and it will soon be on the shelf of your local bookstore.  A very grande accomplishment!
  • Now you need to get your book off the bookshelf and into the hands of book-buying readers.

But wait! Isn't that my publisher's job?

Yes.

Then why should I bother?  I've got another story to write.
